Tips for perfect juicy air fryer salmon

Air fryer salmon is a quick, and delicious way to enjoy this staple protein—but getting it just right takes a few simple tips.

  • Use a good air fryer: An air fryer with strong and efficient heat ensures even cooking and consistent temperature, which helps prevent dry or unevenly cooked salmon.
  • Don’t overcook it: Salmon cooks quickly, so keep an eye on the time. Overcooked salmon becomes dry and loses its juicy-ness.
  • Use a meat thermometer: For best results, cook salmon to an internal temperature of 145°F.
  • Preheat your air fryer: especially if your airfare model takes time to get got- this helps the salmon cook evenly from the start.
  • Avoid overcrowding: Leave space between fillets in the air fryer basket so hot air can circulate properly.

Air fryer matters

Not all air fryers are created equal, and the type you use can make a big difference in how your salmon turns out. I have two air fryers—one from Ninja and one from Our Place—and the cooking times and temperatures vary between them. The Ninja air fryer heats up quickly and maintains a high, consistent temperature, which helps sear the outside of the salmon while keeping the inside tender and juicy. It’s efficient and powerful, which is great for getting perfectly cooked salmon in under 10 minutes.

On the other hand, my Our Place air fryer, like many oven-style models, doesn’t run quite as hot or fast. While I love it for other uses, these types of air fryers can take a bit longer to cook and may not lend as much browning on the exterior of the salmon. You can still use these types of air fryer to cook salmon of course, but keep in mind, cook time and temperature may need to be adjusted.

In general, if your air fryer takes a while to heat up or doesn’t get very hot, plan to add a few extra minutes to your cook time. Always rely on visual cues and a meat thermometer rather than just the timer, especially when switching between different brands or styles.

Serving suggestions

For a classic option that never fails, serve this juicy tender salmon with steamed jasmine rice. Roasted or air-fried vegetables like broccoli, asparagus, or green beans make for a delicious side. If you love your salads, try a cucumber salad, mixed greens, or something with a citrusy or sesame dressing. Don’t forget the toppings—kewpie mayo, sesame seeds, green onion, or a drizzle of gochujang sauce really takes your salmon to the next level. You can even turn it into a rice bowl or wrap it in lettuce or seaweed with your favourite toppings for something that resembles the flavours of iconic onigiri.

Storage and reheating

Let the salmon cool to room temperature, then place it in an airtight container and store it in the fridge. It’s best to eat it within 2 to 3 days. If you want to save it longer, wrap it tightly and freeze it for up to 2 months.

Reheating Tips – Salmon can dry out easily, so reheat it gently:

  • Air Fryer: Heat at 350°F for about 2-3 minutes.
  • Oven: Wrap in foil and bake at 300°F for 10–12 minutes.
  • Stovetop: Warm in a pan over low heat with a little oil or butter.
  • Microwave: Use short bursts (30 seconds at a time) with a damp paper towel on top to avoid drying it out.

Tip: Reheat just until warm—don’t overdo it or the salmon will become dry.
