Tips for Crispy Wings without Deep Frying
You don’t need a deep fryer to get perfectly crispy wings—air fryer wings can be just as crunchy and delicious! First, make sure to pat your wings super dry with paper towels before seasoning; moisture is the enemy of crispiness. Then, toss them in a bit of baking powder (not baking soda!)—this helps draw out moisture and creates that golden, crackly skin. Just toss the wings with a small amount of baking powder along with your seasoning, then air fry as usual. Just be sure to use baking powder sparingly so it doesn’t affect the taste. Don’t overcrowd the basket; give those wings plenty of space so the hot air can circulate and work its magic. Shake the basket or flip the wings halfway through cooking to ensure even crispiness on all sides. If you want that extra-crispy finish, crank up the temperature for the last 5 minutes to get that extra crunch before tossing them in your sweet and spicy sauce. Crispy wings, no frying needed!
Variations & Substitutions
- Turn up the heat → Add extra sriracha, chili flakes, or a dash of gochujang for a spicier kick.
- Make it sweeter → Stir in a little more honey or brown sugar for a stickier, sweeter glaze.
- Try other proteins → Use chicken drumsticks, thighs, or even crispy tofu or cauliflower for a fun twist.
- Switch up the flavors → Add fresh ginger, a splash of rice vinegar, or a squeeze of lime for extra zing.
Serving Suggestions
These sweet and spicy soy chicken wings are total flavor bombs that shine on their own, but they’re even better with the right sides! Serve them up with a pile of steamed jasmine rice or fluffy white rice to soak up that sticky sauce. Add a side of crunchy cucumber salad or pickled veggies to balance the heat and sweetness. Want to turn them into a fun party platter? Pair them with other finger foods like dumplings, spring rolls, or edamame. I personally like to keep things simple and have them with a side of gochujang hot sauce! & If you’re looking to make this a full meal, try pairing it with my 15 minute butter pasta.
Storage & Leftovers
If you’ve got leftovers (lucky you!), chicken wings store really well. Just pop them in an airtight container and keep them in the fridge for up to 4 days. To reheat, skip the microwave if you want to keep that crispy texture—use the oven or air fryer instead. Just a few minutes at 375°F should do the trick to warm them through and bring back the crispiness. Pro tip: save a little extra sauce to brush on after reheating to freshen them up!
