Air Fry vs Bake?

When it comes to cooking chicken thighs, two of the most popular methods are air frying and baking—but how do you know which one to choose? It really depends on your time, texture preferences, and the tools you have on hand.

Air frying is perfect when you want crispy skin and juicy meat in a fraction of the time. The rapid hot air circulation crisps up the outside beautifully while keeping the inside tender, all with very little oil. It’s ideal for quick weeknight meals or when you’re cooking smaller portions.

On the other hand, baking is better for larger batches or when you want a more hands-off cooking process. It’s great for marinated or saucy chicken thighs that benefit from slower, more even heat. While it takes a bit longer, the results are just as flavorful—especially if you enjoy that roasted, oven-baked texture.

Air Fryer Matters

When making air fryer chicken thighs, it’s important to keep in mind that not all air fryers are created equal. Different models vary in size, wattage, and airflow, which can all affect how quickly and evenly your chicken cooks. You may need to slightly adjust the cooking time or temperature depending on your specific air fryer to ensure the chicken is fully cooked while staying juicy inside and crispy on the outside. It’s always a good idea to check for doneness with a meat thermometer (165°F/74°C at the thickest part). If you’re looking for a reliable option, the Ninja Air Fryer is a popular choice known for its even cooking and versatility.

Tips for crispy juicy air fryer chicken

  • Marinate well: Allow enough time for the marinade to work its magic—this helps tenderize the chicken and infuse it with flavor.
  • Watch the heat: Avoid cooking at too high a temperature or for too long to keep the chicken from drying out.
  • Skin-side down first: Start cooking with the skin side down so the juices baste the skin as it cooks. Flipping it later gives you a perfectly crispy, golden skin and juicy meat.

  1. Ive made this recipe twice now. I love it!

  2. SO GOOD! I skipped the potatoes because I had leftover rice but the chicken was SO good and I would absolutely make it again

  3. Awesome awesome recipe. I added whatever seasonings I had available but the technique was the star of this recipe. Like who thought you could just remove the tray/basket from air fryer and just add potatoes. The timing/temperature resulted in chicken that was perfectly crisp from the outside and juicy and tender from the inside. Potatoes were fully done. This will be in rotation for week nights !

  4. Awesome recipe. Potatoes were amazing. But please check the potatoes type and use accordingly. I boiled it for 10 minutes and then added it.

Absolute banger of a recipe. It’s become my go-to for chicken thighs. My family loves it. Meat stays nice and juicy even as leftovers. Potatoes complete the dish and having the chicken drippings soak into the potatoes gives it amazing flavor on top of the seasonings. Highly recommend for air fryer enthusiasts and people who don’t want to do too much in the kitchen for a meal.

One of the easiest chicken recipes for my family! I’ve made this 3 times already! It’s quicker than you’d expect and I usually add carrots as well when I have them. By the way, you can also do this in the oven if you fancy but it might take 20-30 minutes longer to cook. Overall great!! 😊
